Whilst many people know that CGI is often used to create various effects and explosions, a use of CG that many people don’t think of is to create plants. If a scene calls for various exotic plants, CGI can be a fantastic way to achieve that. Framestore incorporated approximately 7,000 indigenous plant species for the 2016 film The Legend of Tarzan.
Acting With Apes
In the movie The Legend of Tarzan there are a variety of animals included. In order to use these incredible animals such as great apes and elephants within the movie without the worry of animal cruelty or inhumane treatment, the animals were created through the use of CG. Producer David Barron said “it’s not necessary. CG animals do exactly what you want, whenever you want, which is fabulous.”
The use of CGI animals is not something new, in the new Planet of the Apes films the lead ape character Ceaser is performed by Andy Serkis in a motion capture suit. Various other ape characters are performed in this manner, as shown in this video
from the Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.
The Magic Of CGI
Computer generated images are getting to the stage where we can create fantastic true to life images that otherwise would not have been possible using practical methods. For example in the film The Legend of Tarzan, creating a jungle from exotic plants in a film studio could have presented many transport issues and also have possibly been harmful to the plants. Also filming on location could have presented many issues and health and safety concerns as it is far easier to create controlled environment in a studio.
Many people complain about CG in movies, arguing that the use of CG is ruining movies, however as demonstrated in The Legend of Tarzan, they can bring environments and characters to the screen that otherwise we would otherwise be unable to experience in the cinema. The use of CG in the movie The Legend of Tarzan allowed a vast world with many exotic plants to come to life on the big screen for audiences to enjoy.
Grow Your Skills With GrowFX And 3ds Max
The GrowFX plug-in is a fantastic choice for 3DS Max users who want to create plants and foliage for their projects. Within the animation system created by Exlevel, you can create trees, flowers, ivy and various other forms of plant life in a simple
to use interface that allows you to create plants and interact with any objects in your scene, such as ivy crawling up a wall you have created.
This interaction with your scene has some fantastic uses, for example in a post-apocalyptic project. Compositing plant life into a real shot from an urban environment and some particle effects could transform the urban environment into a fantastic abandoned post-apocalyptic location.
3DS Max is a great tool to create 3D images and animations. From 3DS Max you can create some fantastic pieces of film, television and video games. As Mitch Gates the CG Supervisor for FuseFX said in 2014, “There’s no other software application out there like Max”. FuseFX have created CG for television shows such as Marvel’s Agents of Shield, the owner
David Altenau said that on the shots that they add CG elements to “a good proportion of those shots are all CG shots, or 80% of the screen is CG elements”.
For those interested in learning 3D design, Aldo Ruggiero the VFX Sequence Supervisor for FuseFX said “the learning curve in 3ds max is smooth, it’s easy to pick up, you can basically get up and running with even the more technical stuff in less than a month”
Another fantastic thing about 3DS Max is that they offer a free education version of the product. This makes the program a fantastic choice for those looking to learn how to create 3D art.
Want To Take The Next Step With Your 3D Art? Have You Considered Your Rendering Solution?
If you’re looking to take your 3D art to the next level you’ll have to considering your rendering solution. You could opt for the DIY solution and create your own render farm; however that requires some knowledge in computer building. You could follow an online guide to building your farm, however that could still prove difficult and if any issues arise with your farm, you will have to find the error and fix it yourself. You wouldn’t want to be caught unable to fix your farm if it encounters an issue a few hours before a deadline.
There is a fantastic alternative to building your own farm. You could instead choose to use a render service, such as our cloud rendering service. Cloud rendering gives you more than just a rendering solution. It gives you more freedom as an artist. Whilst rendering your projects on our farm, you give yourself time. Time to relax or perhaps work on other projects, making the most out of your time as an artist.
