So you’ve got Cinema 4D and you want some tips on creating incredible projects.

Cinema 4D is a fantastic program that can create some marvellous things like this incredible short animation made with both Cinema 4D and Adobe After Effects, The Machine or this short film experiment made with Cinema 4D.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, no worries, with these 6 handy tips, you’ll soon be sending a masterpiece to our render in our render farm in no time.

  1. Slow Down, Take Your Time
It’s not a race, like any art form it takes time, patience and a lot of practice. Unless you’re born with incredible natural talent, you’re going to have to practice, a lot. Some suggest it can take between 6-10 years to get great at something, so don’t worry if you haven’t become an expert overnight. Set yourself realistic goals and keep improving little by little.
  2. Use Some Tutorials
As Cinema 4D is a very powerful program, it can be confusing, especially for a 3D art beginner. Tutorials are a great place to start, arguably one of the best pieces of life advice out there is, ‘if you don’t know something, find somebody who does’.A great place to find Cinema 4D tutorials is YouTube. Here you can find great videos like this one from VDODNA; where you can learn how to create a photo-realistic Earth.
  3. Learn Your Keybindings
One of the most important things in any application is learning the keybingings (also known as hotkeys). Keybindings can be difficult to learn at first, but after a few days of using them, you’ll find they save you lots of time on your projects. For example a great keybinding to learn is the keybinding to hide/show the axis, Alt + D.
  4. Research Lighting Techniques
Often you’ll have to edit/ add lighting in animations/film projects. It might be a good idea to research lighting techniques, nothing too major, just a basic technique such as 3-point lighting, where you have a key, fill and backlight on your subject.
  5. Start With 2D
By using a program like Photoshop or Illustrator you can start your project in 2D then bring it to life with Cinema 4D. Just like step 1, start small then work your way up.
  6. Give It A Go
Give it a go, don’t worry about doing something wrong, don’t think of failure as “failure” think of it as an opportunity to learn. Learn from the mistakes you make and you’ll soon be on your way to creating something incredible.
